Pique escapes punishment for Espanyol celebration

Barcelona defender Gerard Pique has escaped punishment for his celebration during the Catalan club's derby against Espanyol on Sunday.

The Competition Committee of the Spanish Football Federation has decided not to investigate Pique's controversial celebration in the La Liga fixture.

If they had, it would mean that they would have to investigate "thousands of similar celebrations" across all of Spain's leagues.

Pique had attracted criticism for 'shushing' the Espanyol fans during his celebration of Barcelona's equaliser in the 81st minute which secured a draw against their Catalan rivals.

Quique Sanchez Flores and his team were not impressed with the gesture and filed a complaint against the Spain international but following the announcement on Tuesday, that appears to have been rejected.

A tiny consolation for Espanyol will be that Pique picked up a knock during the match and will miss Barcelona's Copa del Rey tie against Valencia on Thursday as well as the La Liga game with Getafe at the weekend.
